Twitter 101: How to Create Your Own Twitter Moment

Twitter 101: How to Create Your Own Twitter Moment
Twitter's Moments feature stitches together multiple tweets into a slideshow-esque story. This is particularly cool for you to keep up with major things that are happening in the world without having to follow and search for a ton of people to figure out the scoop. There are many uses for Moments, ranging from businesses using it to promote a project and collect audience engagement to people documenting a Twitter friendship. If you don't know how to make your own Twitter Moment, don't worry, many users aren't even aware that they can access this feature. It's really not that hard — once you have an idea of what Moment you'd like to create, you just need to follow a few simple steps. Even better, the steps are the same for Android and iPhone users!Don't Miss: How to Permanently Pin a Tweet to the Top of Your Twitter Profile

Step 1: Find Your 'Moments' TabTo start, head to your profile sidebar by tapping the bubble with your icon at the top-left corner of your screen. Some Android users may not see a profile icon — if so, just tap the hamburger menu icon in the top left instead. With the profile sidebar now open, find and tap the "Moments" button, which appears next to the lightning icon. This will take you to your own Moments screen which is where you will begin to create.

Step 2: Create & Name Your MomentHere's where it gets fun. Once you're in the Moments screen, you'll be able to start creating by either hitting the lightning icon with a "+" in the top-right corner of the screen or by simply tapping "Create a Moment."You'll then be taken to a specific screen for creating. First, you can decide on a title, description, and cover photo to begin your Moment. Be creative with these elements, it's how you'll be able to get people to engage with your Moment.

Step 3: Choose Your TweetsNow you've got to add some content. After choosing the title and cover for your Moment, add relevant tweets by hitting the "Add Tweets" button right under your first slide. This will take you to a screen where you will be able to choose tweets to include in the Moment. You can add tweets by searching through your own tweets, your liked tweets, or just doing a general Twitter search for keywords and usernames. Once you've found a tweet you'd like to include, simply tap it and you will be given the option to add it.You can add multiple tweets at a time as well. While there isn't a limit to the number of tweets you can add to the Moment, Twitter advises not to exceed ten in order to keep your audience's attention.

Step 4: Arrange Tweets to Your LikingRealize that you want one tweet to come before the other after adding them? No sweat. All you have to do is hit the "Reorder" button next to the "Add Tweets" button in the toolbar, and it will pull up a screen for rearranging. From here, just press the tweet you'd like to move and drag it around the screen until it's where you want it to be.You can also change the color of the background that your tweets appear on by tapping the white drop icon at the top right of each tweet. This will let you choose from an array of colors to make your tweet more visually appealing. Be warned, though: You can't change the color of individual tweets, it's all or nothing. Once you've picked the color you want, hit "Apply all."

Step 5: Get Ready to PublishWhen you're satisfied with the look and layout of your tweets, it's time to publish. Before you do, check out the "More" tab at the bottom of the screen. If you think your Moment has sensitive material that warrants a warning before it starts, you can turn the "Moment has sensitive material" option on here. You can also choose to use your location to extend the reach of your Moment. When you're sure that your Moment is ready to go, return to the editing screen and hit "Publish."A tweet with the link to your Moment will automatically appear. You can choose to send out a message to your followers to encourage them to watch your latest story. Now your Moment is out there for the world to see! You can continue to tweet out your Moment or you can send it directly to someone through a Direct Message. Either way, make sure to promote your Moment as best you can if you want audience engagement. The more people view your story, the more likely it is to get on Twitter's primary trending page.Don't Miss: How to Block Tweets with Certain Words from Appearing on Your Twitter FeedFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Add a Custom Background Image to Your iPhone's Control Center

How To: Add a Custom Background Image to Your iPhone's Control Center
A few months ago, we showed off a great third-party keyboard for iOS 8 called CooolKey which lets you customize the keyboard itself with any background image you want. Well, take that idea and apply it to the Control Center and we have CCBackground. This is a Cydia tweak, so unlike with CooolKey, you will need to have a jailbroken iOS 8 device to add a Control Center wallpaper. Note, this will only work on an iPhone or iPod touch, not an iPad. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install CCBackgroundOpen up the Cydia app and search for and install "CCBackground" from developer TheJailPad in the BigBoss repo. Once installed, make sure to respring to full install it.

Step 2: Configure CCBackgroundAfter you've restarted your springboard, head into your Settings app and select the "CCBackground" options towards the bottom. In the preferences, you'll be able to enable the tweak and select your image. There's also an option to prevent your image from appearing in landscape mode, since it'll most likely be squeezed, but unfortunately, it did not functioned for me on my iPhone 6. If it works for you, awesome.

Step 3: Choose Your Image & RespringOnce you've selected an image from your Camera Roll, tap "Done" in the upper-right corner, and your device will automatically respring. After your system is back up and running, you should now have an awesome background in your Control Center. Just slide up and take a look. Now, if only someone would take this idea and apply it to the recent apps menu, we would have total background customization!

How To: Properly Calibrate the Battery on Any Android Phone

How To: Properly Calibrate the Battery on Any Android Phone
After Apple's recent fiasco, it's now common knowledge that smartphone batteries degrade over time. But aside from causing terrible battery life, a degraded battery can also trick your phone's software into thinking the device has more juice left than it actually does.I'll explain everything below, but first I want to give credit where it's due. A former Samsung technician shared the proper battery calibration steps on Reddit — steps Samsung has used internally to help resolve battery issues. So even though there are plenty of anecdotal user-made instructions claiming to accomplish this same task, these battery calibration steps are about as official as it gets.
Why You Would Need to Calibrate Your BatteryAs your battery ages, it can no longer hold as much charge as it did when you first took your phone out of the box. However, your phone's software (and that little battery indicator at the top of your screen) doesn't necessarily account for this. When there's a discrepancy between your phone's software-based battery meter and your battery's actual charge level, it can have some confusing results.Take the Nexus 6P battery issue from a year ago as an example. When the phone's battery began to degrade, users started noticing that their devices would shut down with as much as 30% battery remaining on their software battery meter. Ultimately, this is because the software "thought" the battery had a higher capacity than it actually did — the capacity it had when the phone was new.So if your phone's getting up there in terms of age, there's a good chance that the battery life being reported by the Android OS doesn't match the actual charge level in your battery. If you've noticed that your battery drops from 100% way too quickly, or if your phone dies with more than 5% battery life remaining according to the indicator, it might be time to recalibrate your battery. If your phone is not experiencing such issues, battery calibration is not recommended. This isn't a fix to improve battery life, it's just a method to get help your phone's software battery meter align with your battery's actual charge.
How to Properly Recalibrate Your BatteryAgain, big thanks to Ashtonmore on Reddit for outlining this process. Recalibrating your software battery meter is actually fairly simple, though it takes a bit of time. Proceed at your own risk.Use your phone until the battery dies. Wait until the screen turns off completely. Turn your phone back on. It will likely shut down again before it finishes booting, but the battery isn't completely dead yet. Repeat this process several more times. Power it on, let it keep trying to boot up, then let it die. Eventually, the phone won't even try to boot up anymore — you won't even see the boot logo or splash screen. At this point, you can stop powering the phone back on. Without turning your phone on, plug it into a charger. Let it sit there plugged in and turned off for at least 6 hours. The goal here is to charge it to 100% capacity without turning the phone on. Once you're confident that your battery is fully charged, go ahead and turn your phone back on. Resume your normal usage and normal charging habits. Finally, about a week later, repeat this same process. Let the phone die, try to power it on over and over again until the boot logo doesn't even come up anymore, then charge to 100% without turning it on. Once you've done that, the software battery meter should actually match your battery's physical charge level.Don't Miss: How to Fix an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch That Won't Charge AnymoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Change Siri's Accent on Your iPhone to Australian, British, Irish, or South African

Apple's iOS assistant has an undeniably iconic voice — you know Siri when you hear her. As memorable a voice as it may be, you don't need to stick with her default American accent. In iOS 11, you can choose from two other vocal deliveries, and in iOS 12, there are two more accents at your disposal for a total of four more.Ever since iOS 9, you could choose between American, Australian, and British accents for the English language, but with iOS 12 installed on your iPhone, you also get Irish and South African accents as options for Siri.To change Siri's accent, open Settings, tap "Siri & Search," then select "Siri Voice" under Ask Siri. This is where you'll find all the voice options available to you. You can choose between Male or Female under Gender and American, Australian, British, Irish, or South African under Accents. Remember, those last two options are in iOS 12 only.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About If a gender or accent isn't already downloaded on your device, whenever you tap on one, it'll start downloading the accent, gender, or both. You can check the progress of voice downloads at the bottom of the menu (if you see nothing, it's downloaded). Make sure to wait for it to complete before tapping anywhere else, unless you changed your mind. Tapping on any of these options will also let you hear a preview of Siri's accent and gender, no matter if it's downloaded or not, as long as you have your volume turned up (the Ring/Silent switch does not have to be on ring mode). Once you know what you want, just make sure the accent and gender are checked, and that's it.You can return to this menu any time you want to mix up Siri's accent. For example, if the Male Australian accent isn't doing it for you, go ahead and try the Female South African voice. You have six different voice combinations for Siri in iOS 11 — ten for iOS 12 — so find the combo that's best for you.Unfortunately, you can't ask Siri to change its gender or accent. If you try, it will just give you the option to visit the "Siri & Search" settings. How To: Get Real-Time Info on Friends Around You (Including Exact Location) Using Your iPhone

Imagine that Tinder fornicated with Facebook and had a baby. The product of that union would be the hideous, yet overwhelmingly interesting SocialRadar, an app dedicated to stalkers and stalkees. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Only other SocialRadar accounts can view your profile, but the app relies heavily on integrating with as many other social networking profiles you have, like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter in order to establish existing friendships or common interests you may have with complete strangers around you.As stated by SocialRadar: Or imagine knowing that the stranger who's profile you lurked on is just down the street.Creepy.

Finding Anyone by ProximityThe app also relies on proximity, which you to set using a nifty little slider that reaches up to 100 miles, city, state, country, and even the world! Pick a radius and it will automatically update the number of People Around You, which are sorted into categories of Everyone, Friends, Friends of Friends, and Favorites. You can also find people based on connections, like Professional, Social, and Places.

Staying Private to Those Around YouAn integral feature is the Privacy settings on the main page. There are four main viewing options: Public, Friends Only, Anonymous, and Invisible—I call the last two "creepy" and "creepier". To protect yourself from getting tracked down by weirdos, just disable the Share Exact Location feature.

Setting Up Your ProfileA lot of the information will be auto filled, depending on how much information you have on the social networking profiles that you gave it access to. You can also fill in some extra information in order to meet people with similar interests.

Determining People's LocationsSocialRadar only works with others who also have the app, and there are two ways of viewing people near you when trolling profiles: List and Map. Scroll through and view other SocialRadar users and maybe you'll notice that you and an actual friend are nearby while out drinking. If not made private, you can even map out directions to users before you meet up or abduct them. I actually mapped out this random user, so he better watch out.

Saving Your iPhone's Battery PowerSince this application is constantly tracking your whereabouts, it's definitely draining your battery. Luckily, unlike other apps, the developers of SocialRadar thought of this. Open the settings and go into the Battery Manager preferences to adjust how frequently your location is updated.
The VerdictIn the right hands, this application can be useful, but like history has shown, not everyone will use it for its conventional purposes. I can picture Ted Bundy salivating over this app, so I'm leaning towards it being on the creepier side. Which way do you lean?

How To: Watch YouTube Videos Offline on Your Nexus 7 Tablet

How To: Watch YouTube Videos Offline on Your Nexus 7 Tablet

Almost any video you could want is on YouTube for free, including those very high quality 1080p music videos. You just have to put up with a few ads. But what happens if you're going on a trip and won't have any Internet access? How will you enjoy your favorite YouTube vids? For that, you'll need to download your favorite YouTube videos onto your Nexus 7 or other Android device for offline viewing. If you don't want to "watch" the video, you could even just download the audio track as an MP3.As you can probably tell, Google Play has plenty of apps advertising these capabilities, but none of them work like you want them to. Trust me, I've given all of them a try. These don't work. But you're in luck, because in this softModder guide, I'll be showing you the real way to download YouTube videos, as well as convert them to MP3s, quick and easily on your Nexus 7 tablet! Let's begin! Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable "Unknown Sources"For this guide, you'll be downloading an application that's not currently in the Google Play store. As with all third-party apps not available on Google Play, you'll need to make sure Unknown Sources is checked in Settings -> Security on your Nexus 7 in order to download the app.

Step 2: Download & Install YouTube DownloaderNow, we're going to be downloading and installing YouTube Downloader, a free and open source app from Android developer dentex. If you're interesting, you can check out the source code on GitHub or SourceForge.Click on this link to download the APK file. None of the apps on the Play Store will let you download YouTube videos because that's against the Terms of Service (TOS). Luckily, this app is not restricted to the Play Store or Google's rules.Just tap the APK to begin installing.

Step 3: Using YouTube DownloaderThere are a few settings to configure in YTDownloader. I recommend checking the following boxes:Show preview image Show all video sizes Enable audio extraction (for converting to MP3s) Enable auto-update Now, using YouTube Downloader is very simple. Launch YouTube, search for a video you want to download, tap the share button (the sideways "V" with three circle), and then tap the button for YouTube Downloader. Image via wonderhowto.com Note: VEVO music videos are blocked from download, as well as similar channels. Artists make money from ads. Downloading them would bypass the ads and take money away from the artists. Image via wonderhowto.com If you just have to have a music video on your Nexus 7 to watch while you're camping or on the road, a workaround is to just look for a video not uploaded to a VEVO or similar account, and download that one. It's as easy as that! YouTube Video Downloader will save it in the default "sdcard/Download" folder. Now you can save videos on to your Nexus 7 effortlessly. Give it a try and tell us if it worked for you!

How To: Make Your Mac Look & Feel More Like Your iPhone

How To: Make Your Mac Look & Feel More Like Your iPhone
Is your Mac starting to feel messy and sluggish after using iOS 8 on your iPhone every day? Even with all of the iOS-friendly features built in to Mac OS X Yosemite, your Mac can still feel kind of "old" in comparison to an iOS device—but it doesn't have to. Using the tips and tricks below, you can easily make your Mac desktop or laptop look and feel like iOS 8 in no time.
How to Make Your Mac "Look" Like iOS 8First we'll get the aesthetics out of the way, then we'll move on to getting the iOS 8 feel in the following section.

Step 1: Use an iOS 8 WallpaperIf you want your Mac to look like an iPhone, changing the wallpaper is the logical first step. There are many iOS 8 wallpapers for the iPhone, and thanks to developer Delphox, you can download all of their desktop-sized equivalents using the .zip file below.Download: desktop-friendly iOS 8 wallpapers After unzipping the file, you can save all of them in a folder on your desktop (or wherever), then go to System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver -> Desktop to choose your background from the options that appear on the left. If you don't see your folder, you can click on the + sign to add it to the list. As for placement, I chose the "Stretch to Fill Screen" option (since my display is pretty big), but "Fit to Screen" should work for you if you've got a laptop or smaller display. If you see bars on the top and bottom of the image, you should probably use "Stretch to Fill Screen."

Step 2: Use iOS 8 App IconsDtafalonso created a set of iOS 8 icons that you can use to replace all of the app icons in Mac OS X. These versions are all square with round corners and flat colors, just like on iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches. Note that this icon pack is incomplete, so you won't find icons for every app, but he is working on two more packs, so keep an eye on his Google+ page.Download: iOS 8 icons pack for Mac (click on the "Download" button to the right of the image on DeviantArt) Unzip the file, enter the "iOS 8 Icons" folder, then go to the "Icns" folder inside of that. There you will see the iOS 8-style icons for Mac applications such as Messages, Maps, iTunes, Photos, etc. Replace existing app icons individually by going to Applications, right-clicking on an app, selecting Get Info, then dragging the new app icon over to the old app icon that appears at the top-left of the window. New icons won't show up automatically, so you'll need to open the app and close it to make the new icon appear. Yes, you'll have to do this one by one, but it shouldn't take too long (~5 minutes for me). If you want to speed up the process and do them all at once, there's an app called LiteIcon that can do all the heavy lifting for you.To revert back to your original Mac icons, simply click on the new app icon at the top left in Get Info, then hit Delete on your keyboard.

Step 3: Edit Desktop View OptionsNow that you've made desktop and app icons in Mac OS X Yosemite look more like iOS 8, it's time to edit existing features and options. Start by managing what the desktop looks like by right-clicking on it to go to Show View Options.Edit your desktop in this way:Icon size: 128 x 128 Grid spacing: all the way to the right Text size: 16 Label position: Bottom Show item info: Uncheck Show icon preview: Check Sort by: Snap to Grid

Step 4: Add Apps to Your DesktopNow that the desktop view is all set, add some applications (preferably ones with icons you got from Dtafalonso's icon pack) to your desktop by dragging their app icon over on top your iOS 8 background. Then place all loose files into a folder and arrange all the icons in a neat manner.

Step 5: Increase Dock Size, Prevent App Bouncing, & MoreWith the desktop all set to go, it's time to get your dock looking more like iOS 8. Open the dock, then right-click on the divider and choose Dock Preferences from the list. On this page, do the following:Size: Large Magnification: Doesn't matter Position on screen: Bottom Minimize windows using: Genie effect Check the box next to Minimize windows into application icon and Show indicators for open applications Uncheck the other three options With these features, your app icons will no longer bounce when they open and your open windows will minimize into the app icon itself, giving the dock a cleaner look.

Step 6: Add Spaces to the Dock & Choose AppsTo make your dock look more aesthetically pleasing, use my previous guide on how to add blank spaces to your dock. Since there is no way to get rid of the Finder and Trash icons, I simply added two spaces on both ends of the dock, with four of my most used apps in the middle. Obviously, feel free to add more apps and not use any spaces at all—it's all about preference and customization here—but I wanted my dock to be minimal, with the rest of my apps resting on the desktop instead.

Step 7: Add More Icons to Menu BarWhile the left side of the menu bar isn't going to look much like the one on your iOS device, you can adjust the right side, where app icons and the date reside.System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> check the box next to "Show Bluetooth in menu bar" System Preferences -> Date & Time -> Clock-> make sure only digital time is showing (no date) System Preferences - > Energy Saver -> check the box next to "Show battery status in menu bar" Download and install Loading, which adds a iOS-like network activity icon to your Mac OS X menu bar (make sure to enable apps from unidentified developers)

Step 8: Increase Display Contrast & Cursor SizeThis step involves increasing display contrast by going to System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display, then placing the "Display contrast" cursor on the second hash mark. This will improve colors and make it appear more like the IPS display on an iPhone. While this is purely optional, I made the cursor size the largest possible because I wanted it to be the equivalent of what a finger-press would look like on my iPhone.

Step 9: Add a "Lock Screen" Screen SaverWhile it's not officially a lock screen, you can mimic your iPhone's lock screen by adding an iOS-type screensaver to your Mac. Just follow Neil's guide, which provides the download links and everything you need to get the screensaver set up.

Final Result: Yosemite vs. iOS 8 Looks on a MacAfter all the changes, my desktop went from this: To this iOS 8-style look:
How to Make Your Mac "Feel" Like iOS 8While the steps above make your Mac look more like your iPhone, they don't bring the features from your mobile device to your desktop. Check out the list below to see which features from iOS you can add to Mac OS X Yosemite.Install Siri Unlock with Touch ID Make Phone Calls Send SMS and Voice Messages Use Predictive Text Add Widgets to the Notification Center Add Control Center Whether you use some or all of the above tweaks, your Mac should now look and feel like iOS 8 on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. News: Time for an Upgrade? Here's How the Galaxy S9 Compares to the S7 Edge on Paper

News: Time for an Upgrade? Here's How the Galaxy S9 Compares to the S7 Edge on Paper
Samsung has legions of loyal fans, and for good reason — their Galaxy S lineup ticks so many boxes that it would be a downgrade to switch to any other phone. Though if you're still rocking an older model like the Galaxy S7 Edge, the all-new Galaxy S9 can tick all the same boxes plus a few more. But is it worth the money to upgrade at this point? That's actually a tougher call than you might think. These days, all of Samsung's flagship phones are "Edge" models, so your Galaxy S7 Edge is very similar in design to even the latest and greatest. If you're looking for a new model that's most comparable to your existing device, you should have no problem sliding right in to a Galaxy S9 (the S9+ is a decent amount bigger). As such, we'll compare these two devices below to help you decide if it's time to upgrade.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About the New Galaxy S9 & S9+

SpecsLet me start with a pretty obvious disclaimer: Better specs don't always translate into better real-world performance. That said, these two phones are running similar software and they're manufactured by the same OEM, so if there was ever a time to look at specs in a vacuum, it's now. Surprisingly, the S7 Edge holds up nicely, even winning in a couple areas — but, of course, the S9 wins out overall. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

Why the S7 Edge Is Still SolidWhen Samsung released the Galaxy S6 Edge, it was a radical departure from their past design stylings. Expectedly, there were some kinks that needed to be worked out after that first overhaul, and the S7 Edge addressed them all. To this day, the seamless borders between metal and glass that were implemented along with the S7 Edge are still Samsung's primary design direction — in other words, you won't feel much of a difference in your hand if you upgrade to the Galaxy S9.The S9 and S7 Edge are almost identical in overall size, and there's been no upgrade in RAM amount, rear camera resolution, water resistance rating, or charging and connectivity. In fact, the S7 Edge even has a bigger battery than the S9, which might be a harder pill to swallow when you consider that the S9 will cost you $20 more than your S7 Edge did in 2016. The trusty old Galaxy S7 Edge. Image by Razvan Baltaretu/Flickr

Why the Galaxy S9 Is Worth the UpgradeRemember how much of an upgrade your S7 Edge's screen was when compared to your last flat-faced phone? Well, that's the exact same feeling you'll get with the S9 — even after owning the S7 Edge. Samsung's new Infinity Displays are all but borderless, and their new 18.5:9 aspect ratio means the screen stretches from a few millimeters away from the top bezel almost all the way down to the phone's "chin."Other areas where you'll notice the upgrade are processing power, camera performance, and the base software. The S9 is rocking a Snapdragon 845 SoC, which is a huge upgrade over the S7 Edge's 820 (actually 3 generations when you count the 821). The camera is mostly an iterative update, though it has an industry-first feature called Variable Aperture that could be a game-changer. And since the S9 runs Android Oreo, you'll get all the latest and greatest software features. Finally, the S9 actually has stereo speakers, so if you listen to a lot of music or watch movies on your phone, it will provide a more immersive experience than your S7 Edge is capable of offering. The new Galaxy S9. Image by Benjamin Geskin/Twitter
Final ThoughtsMy experience with Samsung phones has always been this: They're great when you take them out of the box, but performance slowly starts to bog down over the subsequent months. This is the reason I traded in my Galaxy S7 a year ago — but hey, I'm a phone-ophile, so I admittedly upgrade far more frequently than I should. With that in mind, though, I personally think that now is the perfect time to jump ship from your trusty ol' S7 Edge. Samsung has prioritized improving software performance over the past couple years, so if you're experiencing the dreaded TouchWiz slowdown, the S9 will obviously take that away instantly, but it should also minimize its effects as the phone starts to age.One last thing to take into consideration is the home button: Samsung's 2018 models use on-screen navigation keys. This provides a more consistent experience when using the phone (it's all taps, no mechanical clicks needed), but the fingerprint sensor has now been moved to the back. Placement on the S9 is much better than it was on the S8, plus there's a new touchless unlocking method, but it might take some getting used to if you're a long-time Galaxy owner.Which way are you leaning after reading up on all the specs? Share your thoughts in the comment section below — it might help the next reader get off the fence!Don't Miss: Why the Galaxy S9's Variable Aperture is a Milestone for Mobile PhotographyFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Enable Blazing Fast LTE Data Speeds on Your Nexus 4
The advent of the Google Nexus 4 seemed too good to be true—high-end hardware, unlocked and contract-free at a low price. As time went on, however, we began to see the compromises. The camera was "meh" at best, and most egregiously, it shipped without LTE functionality.Yup, no LTE. What a disappointment. However, that didn't stop me, and I'm sure it didn't stop any of you, from ordering it as soon as it came out. Petty grievances aside, it's a damn fine phone. As it turns out, the Nexus 4 did have LTE capability, only getting it turned on required serious modding and was no easy task. Luckily for us, that's no longer the case! Now there's a way to get LTE data speeds on your Nexus 4 with no more work required than a quick download from Google Play. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Root Your Nexus 4In accordance with the grand Nexus tradition, rooting the Nexus 4 takes very little time or effort, and is very, very easy. Check out the Nexus 5 rooting guide to get started. The only thing you need to do differently is replace the file in Step 2 with one specific for your Nexus 4. Although the guide is for the Nexus 5, the process is, for all intents and purposes, the same on your N4.

Step 2: Install Nexus 4 LTE Modem FlasherBrandon Pearse is to thank for this great tool, aptly called Nexus 4 LTE Modem Flasher, which is available for free from Google Play.

Step 3: Flip the Switch to Enable LTEThe sole purpose of this app is to flash different modems for the Nexus 4. You'll be asked to grant superuser permissions when you first open the app—grant them, then tap the Build.Prop tab on the far right. Check the box for Enable LTE then hit Apply.

Step 4: Install a Custom RecoveryIf don't already have a custom recovery installed, you're going to need one. Recoveries allow us to flash .zip files like the modems you see here, but in case you don't already have one, this app can install one for us. Simply tap the menu overflow icon on the top right, then tap Install TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project). TWRP will download and install automatically.

Step 5: Flash LTE Hybrid ModemNow go into the section labeled LTE HYBRID MODEMS. The first modem on the list, 0.98 + 0.33 LTE Hybrid Modem worked for me, but I'm on AT&T's network in the U.S. If you're on T-Mobile or abroad, it's possible you may have to try another one, but start here. Make your selection, then hit the "Flash" button. The modem will download, your phone will reboot into recovery, and TWRP will install, or flash, the modem. When your phone comes to, if you're in an LTE area in the US, you should see a 4G icon next to your signal strength meter. If you're running a custom ROM, you may see an "LTE" icon instead of "4G". Google wised up and made sure to give the Nexus 5 LTE out of the box, but there's no reason for your trusty N4 should be left out in the cold. Hop on board and start soaking up that sweet, sweet data!

To make your own, you'll need an old NES controller (obviously) and some wireless light switches. He used the ones that have a receiver which plugs into the wall, along with the lamp plug. The price ranges from $10 to $20 at hardware stores. You should take the controller with you to make sure the switch fits.

How To: Install Magisk on Your Pixel or Pixel XL

How To: Install Magisk on Your Pixel or Pixel XL
Google's Pixel phones claimed the top spot in our ranking of the best phones for rooting, but they do have one drawback from a modder's perspective: Because of their A/B partition layout for seamless updates, the devices don't have official support for Magisk. Thankfully, though, developer goodwin has stepped in with a fix, so we can now get Magisk working on the Pixel and Pixel XL.Not all Magisk modules will work on the Pixel or Pixel XL, so if you're only interested in getting the ability to install modules, you should probably wait until there's official support for Magisk on Pixel devices. However, all of Magisk's other systemless abilities are functional, so by following this guide, you'll have root without tripping SafetyNet, you'll get systemless Busybox, and you'll even be able to apply hosts file ad blockers like AdAway without modifying your system partition.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Phones for Rooting & Modding
RequirementsPixel or Pixel XL with unlocked bootloader Android 7.1.2 or higher "Unknown sources" enabled
A Note About SuperSUChainfire's SuperSU is probably the most popular root management app for Android, so there's a good chance you may have it installed right now. The only problem is, Magisk can't work its systemless magic quite as reliably if you have SuperSU installed. So as a heads up, the method outlined in this guide will remove SuperSU's binaries from your phone. But don't worry, because Magisk has its own built-in root management system, so you can still enjoy most of the same benefits of root without SuperSU.The point of Magisk is to give you root features without modifying the system partition.Even better, when Magisk is using its own root management system, it can completely hide root from all of your apps while keeping SafetyNet, Android's built-in secure boot system, intact. This is thanks to the "systemless" aspect of Magisk, as it doesn't modify any files on your system partition, so apps like Android Pay and other mobile banking apps will actually work if you use Magisk's built-in root management system. However, Magisk's built-in root management system will not allow you to modify files on the Pixel or Pixel XL's system partition. This means that certain apps, like Titanium Backup, will not work properly with this root method. But the whole point of Magisk is to give you root features without modifying the system partition, as doing so would trip SafetyNet.If you're dead set on using SuperSU and maintaining the ability to modify files on your system partition with root, know that it's possible, just not recommended. If you wanted to do that, you could just download the latest SuperSU ZIP, then flash it right before flashing the Boot Signer ZIP in Step 5 below — just note that doing so may cause conflicts with Magisk and/or TWRP, and you'll lose some of the benefits of Magisk.Don't Miss: More Information About Magisk
Step 1: Download Files to Your PhoneFirst up, you'll need to download a set of four flashable ZIPs on your phone. Some of these files will be different, depending on whether you're using a Pixel or a Pixel XL, so we've categorized them into two sections below. If you're using a regular Pixel (Sailfish), tap each of the following links to grab the four necessary ZIPs:Pixel Downloads:Download ElementalX for Pixel (.zip) Download TWRP for Pixel (.zip) Download Magisk for Pixel (.zip) Download the Boot Signer for Pixel (.zip)Otherwise, if you're using a Pixel XL (Marlin), hit up these next four links one-by-one to download all of the requisite files to your phone.Pixel XL Downloads:Download ElementalX for Pixel XL (.zip) Download TWRP for Pixel XL (.zip) Download Magisk for Pixel XL (.zip) Download the Boot Signer for Pixel XL (.zip)

Step 2: Install Magisk ManagerMuch like Xposed, Magisk is a two-part system. The first element is what you would call "Magisk," in that it serves as the framework upon which Magisk modules are installed. The second half of the equation is an app called Magisk Manager, which lets you download and install modules and tweak settings related to Magisk. So, while we won't actually be installing Magisk until later in this guide, now would be a good time to install the Magisk Manager app. It isn't available on the Play Store for Pixel devices, so you'll have to sideload the app. That's simple, though — just grab the APK from the following link, then launch the file and press "Install" when prompted.Download the Magisk Manager app (.apk)

Step 3: Re-Flash the Stock Boot Image (Most Users)If you currently have TWRP, SuperSU, or a custom kernel installed, these mods alter your boot image, which creates conflicts when you install Magisk, so you'll have to clean things up first. The most reliable way to prevent such conflicts is to start fresh by reinstalling the stock boot image using Fastboot. So first up, if you have any of the above-listed mods installed, download the factory images package for your Pixel or Pixel XL directly from Google. Then, extract the contents of the ZIP and open the folder this creates. From there, extract the second archive you'll find in this folder, then open that folder and copy the boot.img file. Next, paste the boot.img file into the platform-tools folder inside of your ADB and Fastboot installation directory. For Windows users, this can be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk. For Linux and Mac users, it depends on where you installed ADB and Fastboot in the first place, so if you're not sure about the folder's location, search your computer for "platform-tools."After that, Windows users can hold down the shift button on their keyboard, then right-click any empty space in the platform-tools folder and choose "Open command window here." Mac and Linux users will have to open a Terminal window and change directories to the platform-tools folder. When you're done there, turn your Pixel or Pixel XL off. When the screen goes black, press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously, and your phone will enter Bootloader Mode. From here, connect the phone to your computer with a USB data cable, then type the following command into the Terminal window:fastboot flash boot boot.imgNote that Mac users will have to add a period and a slash (./) to the beginning of the above command, and Linux users will have to add a slash (/). When you're done there, leave the command prompt or Terminal window open, and leave your phone on the main bootloader menu, because you'll need to re-install TWRP next, and that requires Fastboot as well.

Step 4: Install TWRPRe-flashing the stock boot image will have removed TWRP recovery if you already had it installed. But you'll need TWRP in order to flash Magisk, which means you'll need to reinstall the custom recovery. So download this file, then place it in your platform-tools folder. From there, type "fastboot boot twrp.img" into the command prompt (without the quotation marks), then hit enter. When TWRP boots on your phone, tap the "Install" button, then select the TWRP ZIP you downloaded in Step 1. After that, tap "Add more ZIPs," then select the VerifiedBootSigner.zip file and swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen. When that's finished, head to TWRP's main menu and select "Reboot," then "Recovery."If you'd like a more detailed guide for installing TWRP on your Pixel or Pixel XL, we've outlined the entire process with a full tutorial that you can find at the following link:Don't Miss: How to Install TWRP Recovery on Your Pixel or Pixel XL Installing TWRP.

Step 5: Flash the ZIPsAt this point, go ahead and disconnect your phone from your computer. Next, make sure your phone is booted into TWRP recovery mode. From there, tap the "Install" button, then navigate to your device's Download folder. But before you get to flashing, note that the order in which you flash the ZIPs is important. So first, select the ElementalX.zip file, but don't flash it just yet. Instead, tap the "Add more ZIPs" button towards the bottom of the screen. After that, select the Magisk ZIP file, then tap "Add more ZIPs" again. Next, select the TWRP ZIP file, then hit "Add More ZIPs," and finally, select the VerifiedBootSigner ZIP. When the message at the top of the screen says "4 out of max 10 Files queued," you're all set, so swipe the slider at the bottom of the screen to start the process.Note: If you opted to flash SuperSU, add the SuperSU ZIP after TWRP, but before the VerifiedBootSigner. Flash ZIPs in this order: 1. ElementalX, 2. Magisk, 3. TWRP, 4. Boot Signer. Since ElementalX has an AROMA installer interface, you'll have to make a few selections at the beginning of the flashing process. We recommend leaving these options set to their default values, so tick "I agree," then tap "Next" a few times and press "Install ElementalX" when prompted. When that's done, tap "Next," and then "Finish," and you'll be taken back to TWRP. After ElementalX installs, you'll see a readout in TWRP that shows the other three ZIPs being installed. When that's finished, just tap "Reboot System" to wrap things up. If you're prompted to install the TWRP app at this point, select "Do Not Install."

Step 6: Enable Magisk FeaturesWhen your phone finishes rebooting, open the Magisk Manager app and grant the permissions it requests. From there, head to the side navigation menu and select "Settings." Next, enable the BusyBox, Magisk Hide, and Systemless hosts options, then head back to the main menu. Now, if you tap the "SafetyNet check" button, you should see a message that says "SafetyNet Passed." With all three messages in Magisk's main menu showing green check marks, this means your phone is now rooted, but you'll still be able to use apps like Android Pay and Pokémon GO. Essentially, none of the current root detection methods used by security-minded apps will have any idea that your device is rooted, so you shouldn't be inhibited in any way.As I mentioned earlier, some Magisk modules are not compatible with the Pixel or Pixel XL. An incompatible module can result in a bootloop, so be careful when installing modules in general, and visit the provided support thread to ensure the module will work on your phone.Aside from that, you'll probably want to install the systemless version of AdAway, since it'll now work flawlessly on your phone. So if you'd like to block all ads system-wide while keeping SafetyNet intact, grab this APK install it, and tap "Apply Ad Blocking."Don't Miss: Rumor Roundup: Google Pixel 2 to Feature a Better Low Light Camera, Snapdragon 835 & MoreFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Hide Your Call & Message History for Specific Phone Numbers Using Reflection for Android
Only scumbags hide their call and message history, right? Wrong. While it may seem like a tactic for the unfaithful, it's still a good thing to do for certain contacts on your phone that you don't want to block outright.Blocking someone on your phone seems cruel, because you never know if someone might genuinely need your help one day—even if they do happen to be your crazy ex-lover. That being said, it doesn't feel very ethical to go through and delete call or messaging history either.Your current significant other may not like you talking to your ex, but it's important if your ex needs a reference, wants to tell you a good friend passed away, or is helping you out with a complex math problem. To save your current lover the stress of knowing that you talked, use Reflection from dev Riyajudeen Mohamed Yousuf, which automatically hides and PIN-protects the history from certain numbers automatically. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
In order to benefit from this application, your Samsung Galaxy S4 (or other Android phone) must be rooted and have the Xposed Framework installed.
What Reflection Can Do for YouReflection is a simple app that hides your call history on a per-number basis. Add a number, then dictate if you want to hide both incoming and outgoing call history from the designated contact. The ability to hide your messaging history is still not fully functional on KitKat ROMs, but it is in the Alpha stages of development, so it should be operational very soon.

How to Get Reflection on Your PhoneInstall Reflection from the Play Store for a buck, or test it out first with a free APK version the developer was kind enough to include on his XDA thread. After installing it, make sure to activate it through Xposed and reboot your device.

How to Set Up Your Invisible Call LogTo begin, you'll first need to create a PIN for Reflection. This will ensure that only you can see the hidden call and messaging log. Next, tap the addition sign to add a contact or number, then select what logs will be hidden with the contact. Test it out and take a look for yourself. Your history will be saved in the application's Log View, but your personal call log will remain empty. Once the messaging functionality is ironed out for KitKat systems, this app will be even more valuable. If you like what you see with Reflection, show support for the dev and make an in-app donation, or purchase the Play Store version linked above.
