How To: Unlock Your Mac Using Your iPhone's Touch ID or Lock Screen Passcode
Apple's Touch ID, introduced on the iPhone 5S, has definitely made my life a little easier. Not only can I unlock my device, I can use the tech to log in to websites, make purchases through iTunes, and buy groceries at Walgreens using just my fingerprint. Still, as awesome as Touch ID is, it's pretty limited as to what it can do on native apps.Luckily, third-party developers have taken it upon themselves to implement the fingerprint recognition feature in their own apps. One such example is MacID, from developer Kane Cheshire, which lets you use your Touch ID fingerprint (or a passcode, for older devices) to quickly unlock your password-protected Mac. Step 1: Install MacID for Mac & iOSTo start unlocking your Mac with Touch ID, you'll need to install MacID on both your computer and iOS device, which is free for a limited time. Before you download MacID, make sure that your computer and iOS device support Bluetooth LE (which is how MacID pairs devices). Step 2: Pair Your DevicesAfter the apps are installed, open MacID on both your Mac and iOS device. (If you can't open it on your Mac, double-check that your computer is compatible, and make sure your Gatekeeper settings allow apps from outside the Mac App Store.)On your Mac, the app will search for your iOS device using Bluetooth, so make sure it's enabled on both devices. When it finds your iOS device, click on it, enter the password to your Mac, and hit "Finish." This will encrypt your password and allow you to use Touch ID (or your passcode) to unlock your computer. On your iOS device, your computer should show up without you having to do anything. Under Connected Devices, you'll see your computer, as well as a lock sign and a few icons to control music playing from iTunes.In Settings, you can disable the audio controls, change the color scheme of the app, stop your device from being discoverable, and disable Touch ID.

Step 3: Unlock Your MacUsing several gestures, you can not only unlock your computer, but also lock it, wake it up, disconnect from it, and even send text to it. Swipe right on the connected device to view the wake, lock, and unlock controls.If your computer is locked, unlock it by tapping on the connected device. Hold down on the connected device to bring up a menu with the rest of the options. Below you can see the Touch ID popup that appears when you want to unlock your device. You can then either use your fingerprint or your iOS lock screen passcode to unlock your computer. Additionally, you can set up auto-lock and proximity wake, which locks your computer when you leave it's proximity and unlocks it when you come back. Interested in other automatic-locking features? Hackers are good at what they do—some can even use the way you move your phone to guess a 4-digit PIN in five attempts or less. That's why most of us with compatible hones use the fingerprint scanner. It's just much more secure. Or is it?Researchers from Michigan State University and New York University have developed what they call "MasterPrints," which, when tested through computer simulations, were able to trick fingerprint scanners 65% of the time.The New York Times reports that the techniques work because fingerprint scanners only go off partial prints, not off a complete snapshot of the finger. NYU researcher Nasir Memon asserts that partial prints are much easier to crack than whole prints, and in fact, the more fingerprints saved to the phone, the easier it is to gain access. Even some unlimited data plans have carrier-imposed mobile data caps that throttle the user if they exceed them. Keeping track of your exact usage each day will help make sure you don't get billed more or throttled like a chump near the end of the month.Whether you have 1 GB or 10 GB of data to work with or even "unlimited," it's imperative that you know how to monitor your usage effectively so you don't accidentally exceed your limit and either incur unwanted charges or get stuck with slow connectivity and SD videos.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Disable for Maximum iPhone Security There are three main ways to keep tabs on your mobile data on your iPhone; Some users will be able to see the stats right in their Settings app, while everyone else will have to rely on their carrier's app and/or widget. There are also third-party apps such as My Data Manager that could help you out, but we'll just concentrate on the more official methods here.
Method 1: View Usage in the Settings AppThe easiest way to view your cellular data usage is within the Settings app, but this is only really helpful for users who have T-Mobile or some overseas carrier. If you have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, you won't be able to see your actual data usage, but you will still be able to work out a method for estimating your monthly data usage, though, it's easier to just use Method 2 or 3 below instead.

If You Have T-Mobile ...Go to "Cellular" from inside Settings, and look for your carrier's section. If you see an option called "Usage" under your carrier submenu, tap on that to see how much data you used for the current month out of your limit. It should also give you details about when it was last updated, as well as when your billing cycle ends.

If You Have AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon ...In the "Cellular" settings, scroll down a bit to the Cellular Data section. Here, your iPhone will show you how much data you've used in the "Current Period" and on an app-to-app basis.You'll notice that during my current period, I've used 114 GB of data! That's because the usage stats don't reset themselves automatically at the end of the month. You have do this manually yourself at the start of every billing cycle if you even know when that is. Scroll down to the bottom and hit "Reset Statistics" at the beginning of your data cycle, and your iPhone will track how much mobile data you use.

Method 2: View Usage with Your Carrier's AppEach carrier has their own app, and it's likely that you already have it installed if you ever paid your bill from your iPhone before. If not, just head to the App Store and find yours by searching for the name of your carrier there. For example, Verizon's app for viewing your personal account information is called "My Verizon." Below is a quick list to the most common carrier apps.myAT&T myCricket MyMetro My Sprint Mobile T-Mobile U.S. Cellular – My Account My Verizon Using My Verizon as an example, once opened and logged in, it will immediately show how much data you or your family used and how much time is left in the month. By going to the "Data Hub" (either by tapping on the data remaining note or from the app's menu), you can see even more detailed information about the mobile data stats for the current month. Other carrier apps work similarly.

Method 3: View Usage with a WidgetSome carriers (not all) also have widgets available with their account management apps. Verizon is one of the few who provides one, but you can still check and make sure by following these steps.First, if you have an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, just press firmly on the app's icon on the home screen to bring up the menu. If you see a widget there, you know your carrier has one. If not, they don't. For those of you who do see a widget, it'll show all your stats right there. You can also tap "Add Widget" to add it to your Today View page that can be accessed from anywhere.Alternatively, you can view your Today View page by swiping right from the home screen, from the lock screen, or from the notification center, tap "Edit" at the bottom of it, then look for and add your carrier app's widget (if one exists) to the included side to see your widget everywhere. All three of these methods are effective, though the latter two are necessary for accurate tracking if you don't have T-Mobile. Still, the most important aspect of this is that you're able to easily see how you're doing with regards to data, to avoid overages or throttling. An uncapitalized proper noun in a message or email is a serious no-go for those skilled in the art of grammar. But trying to make a lowercase letter uppercase (and vice versa) is not a fun task if you're using an iPhone. You've got to point the cursor is just the right spot to change a letter, and that's a skilled art in and of itself.Apple has finally taken this tiny irritation into consideration with the iOS 8 update, requiring just a few taps and no cursor pointing. It's sort of a hidden feature in the stock keyboard, so let's run through it to see how it works.Note that you must be using the stock Apple keyboard with "Predictive" text enabled in the keyboard's settings in order for this trick to work. This could work in third-party keyboards as well, as long as you give them "Full Access" to predictive text in their settings. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How It WorksUsing the default English keyboard (or whatever stock Apple keyboard language you're using), you can change the case of the first letter in words by double-tapping on the word to highlight it and then hitting the shift key (i.e., the up arrow icon). Once the shift key has been tapped, the keyboard will automatically show the uppercase option for that word as one of the suggestions. You can also double-tap the shift key instead to see the word in all caps. Then just tap on the one you want to replace the uncapitalized version.This typing feature works across email, notes, text, and pretty much anything that uses the stock Apple keyboard with predictive text (known collectively as the QuickType keyboard).Without predictive text enabled, you could still do something similar by double-tapping on the word and selecting "Replace" from the pop-up menu for a few recommendations, but it only works on well-known names and brands.
The Downfalls to This TrickUnfortunately, there are a few downfalls to this trick.First off, if you have "Auto-Capitlization" enabled in your keyboard settings, you most likely won't ever run into any issues in the first place for well-known proper nouns and acronyms.Secondly, the predictive text feature is pretty good at giving you the right suggestions, where "nasa" would be automatically converted to "NASA." However, if you were to select the "nasa" option accidentally, the trick above won't work; it'll just give you suggestions for different spellings, like "Nada" or "NADA." For something like "gopro," it doesn't recognize the stylization, and will only give you "Go Pro" as your other choice (not "GoPro").Thirdly, this trick works best for words that aren't normally capitalized, like "super" or "monkey" or anything else the predictive or auto-capitalization feature won't correct on their own.What do you think of this feature?
